The mic isn't picking up
You tap the mic, you talk, and nothing shows up on the screen. Run through these checks in order. One of them will fix it.
1. Check the mic permission
The most common cause. Your phone or browser blocked Speakyboo from using the mic.
On iPhone: Settings → Speakyboo → toggle Microphone on. On Android: Settings → Apps → Speakyboo → Permissions → Microphone → Allow. In a browser: Click the lock icon in the address bar → Site settings → Microphone → Allow.
Reload the app after you change it.
2. Check the hardware mute
Some phone cases cover the mic. Some Bluetooth headsets steal the audio. Some laptops have a physical mic mute key.
- Take off your case for a second and try again.
- Disconnect any Bluetooth headphones.
- On a laptop, press F4 or the dedicated mic key to make sure it is not muted.
3. Restart the app
Old fix, still works. Close Speakyboo completely. Reopen it. Try the mic again. About a quarter of mic issues clear up just by restarting.
4. Check your internet
Speakyboo needs a network connection to translate. If your signal is weak, the mic will record but nothing will show up. Look at your signal bars or Wi-Fi icon. If it is bad, move to a spot with better reception.
5. Try a different mic
If your phone's built-in mic is broken, plug in headphones with a mic and try again. If that works, the phone mic is the problem and you need to fix the phone.
6. Still broken? Email us
If none of these work, email support@speakyboo.com with your phone model, your browser if you are on web, and a screenshot of the mic permission setting. We will get back to you within one business day.
In the meantime, you can type messages and translate them text-only. Slower, but it works.
